The Sparta Town Council and the Alleghany County Commissioners met at the Sparta Town Hall

for their informal joint meeti= ng to discuss items of interest to both Alleghany County and the Town=

of Sparta.  Mayor John Miller presided.   The meeting was called to ord= er by Mayor Miller for the

Town Council and Chairman, Ken Richardson for the County= Commissioners.=

 

INTRODUCTION OF THE NEW      County Manager, Don Adams introduced to the = Town Council

BLUE RIDGE BDC MANAGER      and the County Commissioners the new Manager of= the Blue Ridge Business Developmen= t Center, Clark Hunter.  Mr. Hunter updated the Boards on his ideas for developing and enhancing the existing programs in h= opes of providing new opportunities at the BDC.=   He stated that he is looking forward to and excited about being part= of the BRBDC and the Community.

      =             &nb= sp;            =             &nb= sp;    The Boards had a brief discuss= ion on how the BDC would help be the catalyst for business and economic developmen= t in the community.

 

HOMECOMING PARADE AND  &nb= sp;     Brandon Edwards, Alleghany High Scho= ol Student Council

OTHER ACTIVITIES PRE-  &nb= sp;            =   President, requested from both = Boards their support for the Home-

SENTED TO THE BOARDS  &nbs= p;           coming Parade and other activit= ies that will be taking place on Friday, October 3, 2008.  Both Boards pledge their support f= or the Home-coming activities.  No ac= tion was needed.

 

SESQUICENTENNIAL PLAN-  &n= bsp;       An update was given to the Boar= ds by Sandy Carter-Herndon a member

NING UPDATE    &= nbsp;           &nbs= p;            &= nbsp;       of the Sesquicentennial Planning Committee of the activities for the 150th year celebration.  Ms. Carter-Herndon requested that = the Boards adopt the Proclamation presented by the Committee in support of the celebration of Alleghany<= /st1:PlaceName> County’s 150<= sup>th Anniversary, 1959-2009. Page______. &= nbsp; Councilmember John Brady; made the motion to adopt the Proclamation = in Support of the 150th celebration and Lois Sheets seconded.  The vote for:  5 and against:  0.   Commissioner Doug Murphy mad= e the motion for the Board of Commissioners and Millie Richardson seconded.  The vote for:  5 and against:  0.

 

            &n= bsp;            = ;            &n= bsp;            = ;            &n= bsp; Ms. Carter Herndon also requested that the Boards consider making a financial contribution of $1500.00 per board to be decided at their respective meetings.  The Town Council an= d the Board of Commissioners agreed to take the request under consideration.=

 

INTRODUCTION OF THE NEW  &= nbsp;     Councilmember John Brady introd= uced the New Director of the Sparta=

SPARTA TEAPOT MUSEUM            Teapot Museum of Craft and Design, Ms. Cynth= ia Grant.  Ms. Grant <= /span>

OF CRAFT AND DESIGN   = ;            &n= bsp;  gave a brief overview to the Bo= ards on the new opportunities and programs being provided by the Museum.  She also thanked the Council and t= he Commissioners for their support and look forward to working with them in the future.

 

WORK FORCE SUMMITT   =             &nb= sp; Manager Adams invited both Boar= ds to participate in an Alleghany Workforce Summit to be held Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at the Blue Ridge Electric Conference Room.
