The Alleghany County Public Works department is responsible for the daily operation of the Transfer Facility where residents take their garbage for disposal and drop off recyclables; the maintenance and upkeep of all county-owned property, buildings and vehicles; and animal control. The department director is Larry Davis. His office is located in the County Office Building, 90 South Main Street, Sparta, phone 336-372-2010.

The Transfer Facility is located at 431 Osborne Road, Sparta. It is open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. and may be called directly at 336-372-8053.

The Animal Control Officer is available to assist citizens if they have problems with stray dogs or wild animals. The officer may be reached at 336-372-8053 between 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday to Friday or at 336-372-4455 at all other times.

The Maintenance Department may be reached at 336-372-2010.
